The Mantra followed at GIBM is ‘Learning by Doing’
The industry needs managers who can start contributing to their job from the very first day. However, most management students are well versed with theory but lack the understanding of its practical application. The emphasis at GIBM therefore is not only on the number of management books you have read, but on the number of real life case studies you have worked on. The emphasis is also not only on the number of models you have learnt, but on the number of times you have put them into practice.

While classroom sessions will equip students with the theoretical concepts you need to know, the pedagogy focuses on helping students understand the practical aspects of each theory and actually put it into practice. A healthy mix of Corporate Simulation Projects, Industry Mentor ship, Workshops by Industry experts, Corporate Exposure Week, Corporate Assignments, Internships, Classroom Training and Case Studies all go on to help students practice Marketing along with learning the concepts and thus make them Industry-ready.

The same is elucidated below

Market - Responsive Curriculum – Academic Panel
The first step to making learning at GIBM relevant as per current Industry norms happens in the form of the Market Responsive curriculum. If the corporate world is ever changing and dynamic, how relevant are courses where the curriculum remains static for many years? Curriculum design at GIBM is a vibrant, ever-growing and collaborative process evolved by our Academic Panel comprising of senior Industry experts.

These senior experts from various sectors advise and input into what's taught at GIBM to keep it relevant and in tune with current corporate practices

Corporate Exposure Week (CEW)
CEW is a precursor to the summer internship - a 7-day training module where students work at the grass-root level in any business. This initiative attempts to familiarise them with the functioning of the corporate world through first hand exposure right in the first trimester. Students spend a week in any organisation and observe the work processes followed there. This serves as a good stepping stone that helps them handle the summer internship much better as they are already familiar with the ways of working in organisations. A detailed report on the same helps them capture all their learning for the benefit of the entire batch – each student thus gaining exposure to several organisations.

Corporate Simulation Projects – CSPs
CSPs are the real test of whether students can put their learning in practice. CSPs are live projects undertaken by students in the First Year (one per trimester) where the task assigned is real, targets are real and so is the expectation from the results. Every batch works on a completely different set of CSPs.

Some of the CSPs undertaken by students in the recent years are as follows:

BUSINESS MAHARAJA – A BUSINESS VENTURE PROJECT
Divided into groups, the students were given a seed capital of Rs. 500/- with which they had to start, manage and wind-up a firm within 24 hours. The group getting the maximum returns on the seed capital was declared the winner.
  PROJECT 2012 – A MARKETING MIX PROJECT
Students had to float partnership firms of 6 partners each and develop a complete marketing mix (4Ps) on behalf of the firm. The mix was to cater to the Christmas / New Year gifting market. All firms were then given a period of one month to maximise sales of their respective Marketing mix.
PROJECT DIGNITY – A DIRECT SALES PROJECT
Students were assigned to Dignity Foundation – an NGO for the Senior Citizens. They were responsible for direct sales of the membership to the Senior Citizens.
PROJECT AZAADI - AN EVENT MANAGEMENT PROJECT
Groups had to conceptualise, organise and execute an event on the theme of Independence as part of this project.
PROJECT DISCOVER - AN IDEATION PROJECT
The foundation of any successful enterprise is on an idea that is important and unique. In this project, the students were made to camp out of a small town Saswad in Maharashtra. The teams were to survey the market and identify potential business ideas and the same were to be validated by quantitative market research.
PROJECT HOLI - A SALES COMPETITION
Based on the theme of the festival of Holi, this project involved selling Greeting Cards with Holi messages amongst both corporates and individuals. The students got a taste of how competitive the world of sales is!
PROJECT SANTA CLAUS - A MIX DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
Divided into groups, the students were required to conceptualise and develop a marketing mix around a product which would have appeal amongst target consumers around the time of Christmas. Once the mix was launched in the market, the groups were also responsible for delivering on the target sales.

Drona - The Industry Mentorship Program
While students continuously receive conceptual and practical inputs through classes / workshops, there is a lot of knowledge that students can benefit from – knowledge and experience that professionals have gained from several years of their corporate experience.

Under 'Drona', the Industry Mentorship program, students are assigned a personal Mentor from the industry for the entire duration of the course. The Mentor serves as a guiding force and helps the student transform from being an innocent and idealistic management student to a pragmatic management trainee.

The Mentors achieve this by
Developing an improvement plan based on the students’ strengths and weaknesses
Sharing of knowledge on the functioning of various industries and organisations
  Assigning them real projects
  Guiding them on institute projects
A semester wise grading system carried out by the Mentor helps us monitor each student’s progress while feedback on the Mentors helps us identify best practices for the program in the future. Following are some of the Mentors on the GIBM panel.

Marketing in Practice (MIP)
This initiative runs across the entire second year and sees students working for some hours every alternate day in an organisation. The ‘Sales & Brand Management’ students are attached to a Marketing Company for this period whereas the ‘Advertising & Communication’ students are attached to Violet – the  in-house incubator Advertising agency of GIBM.

With real companies, real clients, real targets and real budgets, this assignment helps students understand challenges faced on the job first hand.
With such hands on exposure to working for over 9 months, students are able to seamlessly make the transition from the Institute to the Corporate World.

MOCK SHOP: The Entrepreneurial Incubator
The acid test of business acumen and management skills is to manage one’s own business enterprise. Mock Shop provides students with exactly that opportunity.

A shop created within the premises, it is given on a nominal rent to a group of students who have to think of a business idea, implement it and run it profitably as an entity.
This initiative familiarises them with real-time problems / challenges that a business faces on a day-to-day basis.

  360° Development
At GIBM, we believe that our job is not done by just developing students' management skills and acumen. The 360° program aims at developing the entire personality of each student by honing his/her interpersonal and leadership skills through activities undertaken under the aegis of the 7 Clubs at GIBM.
